Hand in Hand

Hand in Hand
By Brinatello

The path is dark
The sky is nigh
The streets are filled with snow
But I am not afraid to walk
With one who wields a bo

The warrior
Is worn with age
From battles fierce and long
Yet, it in his hand I find a hint
Of trust both kind and strong

Who is this man
Whom hides himself
Behind a coat and hat?
He gives no name except a grin
And nothing more than that

My hand is small
His hand is big
I know that I am safe
To have a hero just like him
Who'll guide this lonely waif

He heard my wails
I heard his steps
Running to my aid
I looked to him
He looked to me
Within the road I laid

He took me in
He fed me broth
And watched me as I slept
Whoever this brave hero was
I'll forever be in debt

The road has stopped
My feet will rest
He led me to a home
One who takes young children in
So they no longer roam

"People," He said
"Is what you need
To raise you as their own
To love, to hate, to educate
To keep until you're grown"

I looked to him
He looked to me
And I began to cry
But all he did was kiss my head
And mouth the words, "Good-bye"

I never saw
This man again
Though, some I heard have claim
That he was really not a man
He's a turtle, with a name
